The Psychology of Learning: Understanding How Students Learn Best.

Research in educational  constantly strives to enable teachers to understand how optimal learning happens in a classroom. It is of prime importance that productive learning happens keeping in mind, the time and effort consumed in the process. Therefore, the psychology of learning how students learn best is of paramount interest in any educational setup.

To begin with, when students enroll and enter any educational institution, especially at the college and university level, they come with some accumulated information and knowledge about the subject which can actually impact the learning in class. Educators and facilitators should harness this prior knowledge to enforce better learning in a classroom.

Also, transferring a learner’s mastery of skills from one context to the other helps them apply the same knowledge in a different context and is often a successful method of learning. Educators should use innovative strategies in class that enhance the student’s ability to transfer their learning in diverse situations and contexts.

Moreover, research in education and cognitive science since primitive times has shown that the social environment greatly enhances learning in students. So, the facilitators and educators should create the right social atmosphere in class with suitable activities that would lead to conducive learning leading to understanding misconceptions and finding solutions leading to the sharpening of communication skills.

Furthermore, students learn more when they can connect their existing knowledge with what they are being taught. So, if the educators create an atmosphere in the classroom and present opportunities for the students to connect past learning with the present content being taught, the students can grasp the context better.
